Marianne O'Connor: Comfortable at all stages of the corporate lifecycle

Sterling is Silicon Valley's creative PR agency. The agency's service mix of public relations, visual media and content marketing helps Sterling clients stand up, stand out, and stand for something.

Since 1989, Sterling has worked with tech companies to craft marketing programs that help its clients find their voices, elevate their brands, and achieve their goals. Sterling has a passion for technology that shows in the stories it pitches, the copy it writes, the websites it builds, and the videos it shoots.

About Marianne O'Connor

Marianne O'Connor is CEO at Sterling Communications, Inc.

Definition of success: Being content with where you are and how you live.

First job: Dance teacher (during high school).

Work philosophy: Your corporate culture is the most important asset your company has. It is not just pleasant words you put up on a wall. Your corporate culture is how you behave, whether or not someone is looking.

How do you stay motivated: I realize how very fortunate I am. I am motivated to pass along my accumulated wisdom to others so they can avoid my mistakes and simply make their own.

Guiding principle: Enjoy what you do, and who you do it with.

Goal yet to be achieved: Raising two grown-up children who actively contribute their talents to society.

Best decision: Starting my own business at 28 years old - the beauty of starting something young is that you don't have anything to lose that would cause you to hesitate.

Worst decision: Not listening to my gut. That gets me every time.

Definition of leadership: Leadership in my book stems from leading by example, nurturing employees, publicly thanking team members, stepping in to solve problems when they arise, and always putting the big picture before personal interests.

Biggest missed opportunity: Having a taller father! ;)

Best mentor: Phil Hyde (former corporate counsel who passed away from leukemia).

One word that best describes you: Spunky.

Like best about job: Watching the next generation of leaders amass new skills that will serve them well as leaders.

Like least about job: Administrative/accounting tasks.

Interests: I love traveling, dancing, cooking, spending time with friends and family and making pottery.

Pet peeve: People who complain from the sidelines. Everyone has the ability to get involved in creating solutions.

Most important lesson learned: When you are going through hell, keep marching.

Greatest fear: The reversal of human rights under authoritarian governments.

Idea of perfect happiness: Spending time with those I love (friends and family) in new places.

Greatest strength: My combination of perseverance and humor.

Characteristic most admired: Selfless generosity.

Characteristic least admired: Intolerance.

First choice for a new career: Educator in a developing country.

Current state of mind: Content.

Exercise of choice: Playing basketball, dancing, and neuromuscular activity (agility ladder).

Question you want answered: Why aren't women running the world?

Most influential book read: A Vindication of the Rights of Woman by Mary Wollstonecraft.

Most ecstatic moment: When I convinced my parents to move to California to be close to us.
